I’ve been a member of the Genesys Athletic Club for about a year now. I thought I would give my impression of the gym and it’s facilities. Genesys Athletic Club is located on the Genesys Regional Medical Center campus in Grand Blanc, Michigan.

The facilities at Genesys Athletic Club are very nice and well kept. I travel around the country quite a bit and this is one of the nicer gyms I’ve ever used. It’s spacious and well lit. In fact it’s probably the largest facility that I’ve ever been to. Due to the weather in Michigan, everything is indoors at the club, so you can work out during rain, sleet, or snow.

I personally am a member for the weights and cardio. They have a wide array of weight machines and free weights. But I warn you, this is not a gym geared for power lifters. You can lift heavy, but there is no chalk and I’m sure that dropping of weights is frowned upon. There are a few guys that lift pretty heavy, but for the most part it’s just normal folks. Usually I don’t ever have to wait in line for a squat rack or power cage on my leg day. There aren’t many guys there in the evening that you will see do deadlifts or squats. There are enough alternatives though that you can always stay busy till a rack opens up.

Genesys Athletic Club has a lot of cardio machines. I’ve never counted up just how many there are, but I’ve never seen them all in use at one time (not even during the New Year’s resolution rush during January and February! I prefer the treadmills for interval training, but they also have a number of stair machines, elliptical machines, stationary bikes, as well as rowing machines. There are plenty of television screens viewable from multiple angles in the cardio section, not to mention the machines that have television screens built into their consoles.

I enjoy cooling down after running by walking around their indoor track. The indoor track has three lanes for varying speeds of walkers, joggers, and runners. The track encircles ten indoor tennis courts, a golf area (for driving, putting, and a sand trap) and an area for specialized sports training. If the weather is nice, you can also use the paved nature trails around the Genesys campus.

They have an extensive aquatics program at Genesys also, including a seven lane lap pool, a therapy pool and a resistance pool. Timing might determine access to the pools, since they host competitive swimming competitions and hold classes as well.

The gymnasium area is comprised of one giant full sized NBA style cross court, which is usually divided into two 84 foot courts by a semi-rigid divider. In the evenings, I see a lot of pick up basketball games, as well as some organized games as well as volleyball.

Raquet sports are a big part of Genesys Athletic Club. As I mentioned earlier, there are ten indoor tennis courts as well as six raquetball/handball courts and two squash courts. I see all ages playing tennis, although I do believe their is an age minimum for the raquetball courts.

I notice a lot of organized class activities as well as personal trainers. It’s hard to miss the Zumba instructors in their Zumba gear, but I also see spinning, yoga and aerobic classes being held in the evening. The personal trainers seem to work one on one as well as with groups. Right now I have a few co-workers who are involved in a team weight loss program (similar to the biggest loser.)

Pro’s and Cons of Genesys Athletic Club

Pro’s:

Friendly Staff
Excellent Facility
Good Equipment
Plenty of Cardio Machines
Wide Variety of Programs and Activities

Con’s:

Cost – It’s the most expensive gym I’ve ever been a member of. But I think the cost works for me, because I feel I have to get my money’s worth by working out more!
Not an Environment for Power Lifters

Thoughts about Genesys Athletic Club

As I mentioned, dues for Genesys Athletic Club are a bit higher than I’m accustomed to. But with their wide variety of equipment and services, I feel that it has been a value for me. I know that it certainly made life more bearable during the harsh winter months. It gave me a place to move about and not be cramped up in my hotel room. Genesys Athletic Club is a family oriented gym with a very friendly and helpful staff. On a personal level, I’ve certainly made improvements in my strength training and conditioning. And after all isn’t that what a gym is all about.
